The commonwealth Games were initially Known as the British Empire Games 9from 1930-19501954, thire name was modified to “British commonwealth Games “the name being retained till 1962 .from 1966to 1974 they took on the title “British commonwealth Games and from 1978 Onwards they were finally renamed the ”commonwealth Games” In 1930,the first Commonwealth Games were held at Hamilton, Canada where 400 athletes from,11 countries took part. Since 1930, the Games have been conducted at four year intervals excepting 1942 and 1946, because of World war II.In the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth games India stood in the 4th place. Australia stood first place (84 Gold -69-Silver -68 Bronze) England stood second place (36 Gold _40 Silver_34 Bronze); Canada Stood third place (26 Gold -29 Silver-31 bronze)
